Hello
I am Mortimer Underhill.
Dame Amaris asked me to write a bit about myself. I am fairly certain I am not interesting enough to warrant such but I will do my best.
Some people would begin at the beginning. My beginning is 29 years ago. I was born. This is not that interesting as people are born often. My older brother and sister managed to do it as well. My father was a warrior of some sort but I don't remember him. He died fighting a war when I was to young to remember. Not long after my mother got sick as well.
Illness is an odd subject. There are so many diseases you can die of. I have seen most of them. My mother's was particularly long and unpleasant. The fever kept her bed ridden, which led to bedsores. She wasted away for almost a year. I was 5 years old when she finally died. I loved her very much so I was very happy to see her not hurting any more. I was sad at the time though also. I am not sure why. Then the Gaffer came. He was very kind. He helped me and my siblings bury mother. We dug our first grave. It was deep in a rich soil. We used good wood to build the casket. The Gaffer took us in and raised us to be gravediggers like him. It is a good and honorable profession. Our lives were not easy. For some reason no one liked us. And we traveled often.
We followed armies and gave good burials to the fallen. It was an exciting time in my life. I learned a great deal about death during this time. I had a chance to bury or cremate thousands. But it is a lonely and tiresome life.
I decided, like my sister before me, to settle down. I looked around for a town to settle down in and found Tyrangel. It seemed a place that I could practice my trade and be happy. I have never been a warrior or a hero. All I wanted was to bury the dead and give the fallen a last measure of respect.
I found though that occasionally I had to fight. I am not sure if I have adapted to this yet but Marentha was always willing to help me. I decided that it would be my home. I asked the Countess Rosalind if I could become a Marenthan and surprisingly she seemed to think it would be a good idea. Now I am the Gravedigger of Tyrangel and oathsworn to Marentha. I am still learning what all that means but I have good people helping me. If I can be of any help be sure to ask though you may want to ask someone more capable or knowledgeable than me.
