Fiefdom of Redlands

Preliminary Survey Report

Location:

Redlands is located south of Karasta, west of the Gallymath Forest and north of the fief of Kellington in western portion of the Barony of Marentha.

Overall Lay of the Land:

The overall character of the terrain is a combination of lightly wooded lowlands and open plains. The trees are mostly pine, with occasional stands of hardwoods. The land has a slight rolling character, such that visibility is almost never more than a mil e or two. However, watchtowers should give greatly increased sight range.

Military:

Redlands has no standing military. However, there is a town guard of 10 in the Town of Redlands. These mostly deal with cases of drunkenness and brawls, and have little in the ways of martial training. In addition to the town guardsmen, another 10 men and women served in the 2nd Tyrangel Militia during the rebellion, and have received a basic training course in the use of weapons. There are no permanent fortifications in Redlands. Recently, a ditch and wooden palisade were built around the Town of Redlands, and a ring of 6 watchtowers plus a seventh in the town of Redlands has been built to give early warning to the town in case of attack. However, the towers are new and only three of them are manned, and only the one in town is manned continually. However, even this should provide a couple of hours notice of attack.

Roads:

Redlands is very much frontier holding. There is one highway running north into Karasta and southward toward the Duchy of Sutherland. This highway was built in 596 to support the movement of troops from Camp Hotchkiss to the front during the rebellion. Si nce the end of hostilities, this highway has become overgrown, and will require improvements.

In addition to the Sutherland Highway, there are a few tracks which connect the outlying farmsteads with the town of Redlands. However, in the rainy seasons these quickly become mires of mud which are nigh impassable.

Resources:

Redlands has an abundance of pine wood, but much scarcer supplies of hardwoods. Recently, Redlands has been importing hardwood from Llangolan for use in new construction.

The soil quality ranges from dark fertile soil to hard-packed red clay, with the majority of the farmland a mixture of both. The farms currently in operation manage to supply the needs of the populace, but there is no surplus available for trade to other fiefs.

In addition to farming, many of the people of Redlands make a living raising livestock. The usual variety of farm animals are found, but large numbers of sheep are kept in some areas, providing a ready supply of wool and mutton.

Redlands boasts two iron mines, but the ore is not of especially good quality. It is quite suitable for farm implements, but the refining necessary to make it of weapon quality makes it hardly worth the effort.

Redlands has a ready supply of high-quality clay, which gives Redlands its name. The clay in Redlands is extremely pure, and makes some of the best ceramics in the county. In the town of Redlands, this clay is made into bricks, which are used in most of t he buildings in town. While not as durable as stone, these bricks are much easier to work with than stone.

At an estimate, the total population of Redlands is perhaps 450, with 100 - 150 living in the town of Redlands working as craftsmen and artisans. Most of the remainder make a living as farmers, herders, or woodcutters. Most of the population is human, wit h some elves as well.
